Intervention · Confidential 1:1 Thinking Partner
CEO Sparring
A thinking partner who doesn’t work for you.
A confidential retainer for CEOs: a sparring partner who helps you ask the questions that produce your own answers, on agreed dates and at short notice.
Bring one question
What are you currently thinking about that you cannot really think through with anyone inside the company?
- Rhythm
- Monthly retainer, about 10 hours
- Who
- 1:1, the CEO only
- Where
- In person, phone or video
An old joke says a CEO is a prison warden. You built the organization around yourself, it worked, and in time it became a prison you also have to guard.
Inside the company everyone has a role and a stake in what you decide. A sparring partner has neither. Thomas has no favourite solution to anything, and he does not hand you answers. He helps you ask the questions that produce your own.
Like a sparring partner in the ring, he can stage a hard exchange so that you leave stronger. He never aims to knock you down for the sake of winning.
Four people who could help you think
- A trainer
- tells you what to do.
- A mentor
- teaches you the path they have already walked, and you follow it.
- A coach
- works through your development at scheduled times.
- A sparring partner
- asks, catches what you say, and sends it back from an angle you did not expect. New options appear in that moment, drawn from your potential rather than the partner’s.
How the ball comes back
Before the first round
A personality portrait, then a diagnostic interview of one to two hours built on an adapted OODA loop. Thomas looks for the weak points and strengths in how you work through each stage.
- ObserveWhat do you notice, and what do you miss?
- OrientWhat do you weigh when you size up a situation?
- DecideHow do you reach the decision?
- ActHow well does the decision stick?
In the sessions
Some problems need closed thinking: executing better what you already know you must do. Others need open thinking: asking whether to fight this fight at all, or in a different style. Thomas moves you between the two and holds the space while the switch is uncomfortable.
He also reads the state you are in, and whether it suits the challenge in front of you.
A month on retainer
At least four sessions a month. Most take an hour, some two or two and a half; about ten hours in total, arranged around both diaries. In between, you can reach Thomas at short notice to run an idea past him.
An AI reads your words.
It can be a useful sparring tool, and it gives answers. It cannot see your face when you say the sentence, or hear whether you say it in anger, anxiety or enthusiasm. The same words mean different things in each state. A sparring partner feels how the punch lands on the glove, and can help you ask better questions rather than only answering them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Fit, format, fee and how to begin with CEO Sparring.
Why does a CEO need an external sparring partner?
The CEO carries decisions that cannot be explored freely inside the organization. Colleagues have functional roles and political stakes, board members have governance agendas, and external cheerleaders offer superficial encouragement. CEO Sparring provides an independent, confidential thinking relationship outside company politics to test difficult thoughts, challenge assumptions, and examine options before committing authority and capital.
How does CEO Sparring differ from conventional executive coaching?
A coach works through your development at scheduled times. A sparring partner has no favourite solution and gives no advice; Thomas asks, catches what you say, and sends it back from an angle you did not expect. He starts with a personality portrait and a diagnostic interview built on an adapted OODA loop, then works on the substance of your actual decisions.
What is the three-month initial engagement, and are there long-term commitments?
Three months is a suggested starting horizon for building shared context, establishing a working rhythm, and following decisions into action, not a contractual minimum. Commitment and notice terms are discussed before an engagement is agreed. No specific outcome is promised.
How are sessions conducted and confidentiality maintained?
At least four sessions a month, about ten hours in total. Most sessions take an hour, some two or two and a half. You meet in person, by phone or on video, depending on what confidentiality requires, and you can reach Thomas at short notice between sessions. Thomas works outside your governance structures, so you can think out loud.
