About this course

Leadership and learning meet in many small, everyday problems. Some employees do not want to learn, often for understandable reasons. Some management behaviour discourages learning. Hierarchies narrow the room to grow. Newcomers who think they already know it all fall on their faces and conclude they have no talent. And people who reach mastery, without a new challenge, tend to leave - usually at the least convenient moment.

Each stage of learning, from beginner to master, comes with its own mindset and psychological perspective. This course covers the stages and how a leader can recognise and respond to each, respectfully. The stages are discussed with examples, many of them drawn from participants’ own experience, and towards the end there is a game in which participants consciously do it wrong.

The intention is that managers are surprised less often by their own and other people’s behaviour, and become calmer and wiser in how they step into - or stay out of - other people’s learning.

What the course explores

  • Why people sometimes do not want to learn, and how management behaviour can discourage it
  • The stages of learning and the mindset that comes with each
  • Working with beginners, including those who do not yet know they are beginners
  • Keeping people who reach mastery challenged
  • Learning from examples in the room and a deliberate do-it-wrong game

Intended takeaway

Recognise different learning stages and develop ways to respond appropriately as a leader.

Proposed intended understanding, not a promised result.
