About this course

Feedback is easily treated as a duty: the annual appraisal, the positive and the negative. At its core it is simpler than that. It is the information that comes back to a system, including a human being, about whether a goal is being reached. Negative feedback means the goal is being missed and something needs adjusting.

Many managers know the moment of walking past a situation, wanting to say something, and deciding not to because it will become a mess again. Or of saying it anyway and watching it land badly: the other person is offended, shuts down or nods while checking out, and the change that was needed does not happen. The better the intention, the more frustrating that is.

This course concentrates on human-to-human feedback, one to one, one to many and many to one. It looks at giving feedback that is useful, and at receiving feedback and getting the good out of it, even when it arrives a little edgy.

What the course explores

  • Feedback as information for adjustment rather than a verdict
  • Why well-intentioned feedback can create upset instead of calm, or simply fall flat
  • What happens when the message gets lost and the other person shuts down or becomes defensive
  • Giving feedback one to one, one to many and many to one
  • Receiving feedback usefully, including when it comes across badly

Intended takeaway

Understand feedback as information for adjustment, and develop more useful ways of giving and receiving it.

Proposed intended understanding, not a promised result.
